Empowering Sudanese Refugees: Save the Children Sweden’s work in the refugee camps of Western Ethiopia

This report gives an account of Save the Children Sweden’s (SCS) experience in the Sudanese refugee camps located on Ethiopia’s western border following the new refugee influx in 2011. It presents the programm’es history, contents, target groups, strategies, lessons learned and ways forward. The two major components of the programme are (i) Community based education, which involves the provision of preschool and alternative education to refugee children and support to primary school education in the refugee camps; and (ii) Psychosocial support programme, which covers activities directed at the rehabilitation and integration of vulnerable groups of children and youth.
The programmes documented in this report were implemented in close collaboration with the Administration for Refugees and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) – an institution established by the Ethiopian government – and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
