Save the Children
In 2011, Save the Children field tested early childhood development resources geared toward developing emergent literacy and math (ELM) skills in young children. Testing was done as a part of a USAID-funded early childhood care and development (ECCD) program in Bangladesh. In addition to normal training, teachers in this program received extra training on ELM, classroom management, and play-based learning.
Within eight months, a measurable improvement in participant students’ literacy and math skills was seen. Improved health and general wellbeing were also recorded, when compared to student performance in prior years.
This field testing of early childhood development resources produced measurable results as well as recommendations for future implementation and development of the tools.
