Education Assessment: Iraq 2017

The impact of conflict and displacement in Iraq on education has been stark with over three million children, including more than 90 percent of children in conflict-affected areas, not attending school on a regular basis. However, while we know that children’s access to education has been impacted, there is less understanding of whether and how children are learning. In order to address this gap in understanding, Save the Children undertook an assessment from May-June 2017 to assess the literacy and numeracy skills of 1731 children across five governorates in Iraq.

Save the Children staff individually administered literacy and numeracy assessments to children based on the Annual Status of Education Report’s literacy and numeracy surveying tools (ASER) in order to obtain a better, more rigorous understanding of the education levels of children affected by violence and displacement in Iraq. The findings will inform future program design in areas of intervention for Save the Children as well as provide a baseline for measuring the impact of their educational work.
