Save The Children participated in discussions on the EU Child Rights Strategy at the European Parliament meeting of the DROI subcommittee of the European Parliament on November 29, 2010. The Strategy is expected to be adopted by the Commission in March 2011. The discussion emphasised the need for the EU to have a child rights strategy that cuts across both internal and external EU policies. Save the Children’s presentation underscored how external and internal policies may require an integrated response, giving the example of how migrant children – as they travel from countries of origin, through countries of transit and onwards to countries of destination – may be affected in succession by EU external policies, development and cooperation policies, border policy and asylum and immigration policy, all of which need to be coherent and consistent.
