Maban County is located in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State. It hosts the largest refugee population in South Sudan, with 171,162 refugees who fled the conflict in Sudan’s Blue Nile State that broke out in 2011.
In 2023, research from Save the Children and the Rift Valley institute highlighted ‘no historical precedents to the magnitude of flooding that has affected Maban since 2019. As a result, communities were overwhelmed as they lacked intergenerational knowledge that they could use to cope with flooding’. Since then, Maban has continued to experience yearly floods damaging homes, schools and health facilities.
With DANIDA funds, Save the Children Denmark built on existing education and child protection programs in Maban – especially in refugee settlements – to engage children and communities in anticipatory action, as a way to strengthen community’s climate resilience in the face of the increasing frequency of floods.
