Save the Children International
Following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, Save the Children has focused on children’s participation in developing school preparedness, evacuation plans and advocating for making disaster risk reduction (DRR) a part of primary and secondary school curricula. DRR in education has now been enshrined in national policy, and child-led DRR principles have been integrated into standard subjects for students in primary schools. Storybooks with animal characters “Alert Rabbit” and “Alert Little Mole” were developed by Save the Children to teach key DRR messages to children. Teacher training was also conducted to support teachers to design DRR activities in schools. Burmese and Karen versions of the booklets and training were created to reach communities along the Thailand-Myanmar border – a Braille version was also developed for blind children.
This poster contains a brief introduction of Save the Children’s work on Disaster Risk Management in Thailand.
