Country Risk Reduction Profile: Disaster Risk Reduction in India

Since 2008, several major natural disasters have occurred in India which have affected the lives of millions. Natural hazards and disasters increase children’s vulnerabilities and can lead to an increase in levels of exploitation, abuse and neglect. In emergencies, Save the Children (SC) has responded immediately to affected families by providing food aid, water and essential items and by investing in long term recovery processes for families. SC has responded to major disasters such as Kosi Floods of Bihar, Aila Cyclone in Sunderbans, Orissa Floods, South India Floods and Leh Cloudburst. Over the past 3 years in India Save the Children and its partners have implemented 9 DRR programmes, which collectively have reached over 200,000 children directly in approximately 275 villages.
