GADRRRES, Global Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience in the Education Sector
With a high earthquake risk, seismically susceptible school buildings, and a lack of knowledge about earthquake-resistant training among the local mason population, Uttar Pradesh developed and incorporated earthquake-resistant school designs into government construction plans and trained local masons and engineers in earthquake-resistant construction so that the risk of earthquake-related injury and death in schools would be reduced. This case study is part of a series of case studies documenting how countries have been developing and implementing Comprehensive School Safety (CSS) policies that address the three CSS pillars: safer learning facilities (pillar 1), school disaster management (pillar 2), and risk reduction and resilience education (pillar 3).
