The vision for MAMI is that every infant under six months of age, at every community and health-service contact, is nutritionally assessed and appropriately supported to survive and thrive. Save the Children and the Centre for Behaviour Change and Communication (CBCC) collaborated to create MAMI implementation tools for low literacy audiences, specifically Community Health Workers in Kenya and Somaliland. These tools were created to enable CHWs to engage and play a critical role in screening, referring, and supporting small and nutritionally at-risk infants under 6 months and their mothers in their communities.
Three low literate materials were developed, tested and finalised. Firstly, a CHW Screening Tool for use in assessing infants and their mothers, and a CHW Monthly Reporting Form were created. Secondly, the MAMI counselling cards from the MAMI Care Pathway Package were adapted for a low literacy audience and contextualized to make them culturally appropriate and relevant to the Somalia communities in Northern Kenya and Somaliland.
Lastly, a guidance document was created to support others to adapt these CHW MAMI Tools for use in other contexts.
