Climate change has meant that extreme weather events such as floods, droughts and heatwaves have become a lot more frequent and severe. Madagascar is particularly vulnerable to these natural disasters, given its extensive coastline and location in the Indian Ocean. Today, it is the second most exposed country to multi-disasters risks in Africa, and it is estimated that one-quarter of its population lives in zones at risk of a natural disaster.
Moreover, the people of Madagascar are among the poorest in the world, with just over three-quarters of the population living in extreme poverty. Not only has poverty been found to increase vulnerability to natural disasters, but the impact of climate change threats may also pull vulnerable people back into deeper poverty.
In order to understand how climate, energy and environment (CEE) issues have affected children in Madagascar, the UNICEF commissioned a report on Climate Landscape Analysis. The present document offers a summary of the report’s key findings and recommendations.
