Save the Children Iraq
This article examines a child- and youth-centred climate resilience initiative implemented by Save the Children in partnership with Al-Aghsan in Al-Kahla’ district, Missan Governorate. In response to increasing climate pressures—including drought, water scarcity, and environmental degradation—the project applied a locally led anticipatory action approach, positioning children and young people as key actors in planning and implementation. Interventions included cash assistance, agricultural and irrigation support, early warning systems, and community action planning to strengthen livelihoods and preparedness.
Impact evaluations conducted in 2024 and a follow-up in December 2025 demonstrate sustained improvements one year after project completion. Findings highlight enhanced food security, improved nutrition, increased household income, and greater access to essential services. These outcomes contributed to reduced reliance on negative coping strategies and supported children’s education and well-being. The project also fostered behavioural change through environmental education and peer learning, promoting sustainable practices at the community level.
Active participation of children and youth in community structures strengthened local governance, inclusivity, and trust, with increased engagement of women and young people in decision-making processes. The initiative further contributed to broader policy discussions on climate adaptation. Overall, the article underscores the effectiveness of combining anticipatory action, livelihood support, and meaningful youth participation in building sustainable, community-driven climate resilience.
