This UN document is a report of the Secretary-General to the General Assembly on the ‘Promotion and protection of the rights of children: Children and armed conflict’.
The report highlights global trends regarding the impact of armed conflict on children in 2013 and the main activities and initiatives related to relevant Security Council resolutions and the closure of its Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict. The report looks at global trends and developments, including the situation in northern Nigeria, recruitment and detention of children in armed conflict, and the deepening conflict in Syria. Education in conflict settings is also examined. Specific numbers and figures are given for a dozen or so countries with known involvement of children in armed conflict.
The Secretary-General ends the report with a selection of recommendations for the parties involved as well as the Member States of UN to take action to halt the involvement of children in armed conflict and the repercussions conflict can have on education, health and security.
