Child Sensitive Indicators for Poverty Alleviation Programming

Poverty alleviation is a crucial component to achieving Save the Children’s global strategy of child survival, learning, and protection from violence. While many studies suggest that economic strengthening programmes can lead to many benefits to children of beneficiaries, other studies show that programmes may have an insignificant, inconclusive, or even harmful effect on children. In order to develop relevant child poverty programmes, it is crucial to understand the linkages between commonly measured economic strengthening results at the household level and the less-understood results of these programmes for children.

This manual has been developed to strengthen Save the Children’s staff understanding of the extent to which poverty alleviation interventions cause benefit or harm to children. It will guide Save the Children staff to apply an appropriate combination of indicators to measure results of poverty alleviation programmes for children.
