Child abuse and neglect in the UK today

This is the first report from the NSPCC’s research study of child maltreatment in the United Kingdom. The findings provide the only UK-wide research-based indication of the prevalence and impact of child abuse and neglect. It was found that the rates of child maltreatment reported by young adults aged 18–24 were lower in 2009 than in 1998, suggesting maltreatment may be less prevalent today. However, significant minorities of children and young people in the UK today are experiencing severe maltreatment and this is associated with poorer emotional well being, self-harm, suicidal ideation and delinquent behaviour
