Breakthrough ACTION

The document provides an extensive overview of the Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria Project (2018-2024), highlighting its achievements, methodologies, and initiatives. This USAID-funded project, implemented by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs and partners, focused on promoting social and behavior change (SBC) to enhance health outcomes across Nigeria. Over seven years, the project employed innovative strategies like human-centered design, gender integration, and multi-channel communication campaigns to address issues such as maternal and child health, malaria, tuberculosis, and COVID-19.

The project covered 17 Nigerian states and impacted millions by fostering community engagement, training health workers, and leveraging partnerships with traditional and religious leaders. Key interventions included promoting priority health behaviors through community volunteers, risk communication, digital platforms, and advocacy initiatives. Efforts also targeted structural determinants, empowering women, and strengthening the capacity of public and private sectors to sustain health interventions.

Achievements include increased vaccination rates, better maternal health care access, reductions in TB case under-reporting, and enhanced malaria prevention. By integrating local resources and adopting sustainable practices, Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria not only improved health behaviors but also set new benchmarks for SBC in the region.
