Case study. Psychosocial support for children through child friendly spaces after cyclone Giri in Myanmar

Cyclone Giri that struck Myanmar in 2010 was the strongest storm to hit the country since Cyclone Nargis moved across Southern Myanmar in May 2008. Cyclone Giri brought heavy flooding rain and raised water levels, causing large scale damage. Save the Children Myanmar’s early assessments highlighted that many children were in an acute state of distress and that the overwhelming majority of homes, schools and and other facilities had been destroyed or damaged. Save the Children Myanmar’s child protection programme helped establish 20 child friendly spaces in Myebon and Pauktaw, two of the most affected areas. Together with WASH, health, livelihoods, nutrition and education activities, the psychosocial support and child protection programme in the aftermath of cyclone Giri is having a significant impact on improving the lives of children in the area.
