Save the Children in Albania and the local authorities of the Municipality of Berat agreed to join efforts through a project agreement actively involving children, families and community members in the struggle to reduce the use of violence against children in schools and at home. This case study is about creating opportunities for young children in poor and vulnerable communities and it highlights the case of Helen, a 6-year old Roma girl, one out of 130 children at Save the Children’s newly supported kindergarten in Berat. The safe atmosphere of the kindergarten gives these children a chance to learn without fear of violence. It enables them to grow with confidence, and equips them to move on to primary school with a better chance of succeeding.
