UNICEF, United Nations Children's Fund
This report is based mainly on analysis of data drawn from UNICEF databases and reports of UNESCO, World Bank, and other organizations that utilize statistical research to analyze the current state of gender equality, especially in terms of women and girls. Its findings are wide and diverse. While gender disparities appear in data relating to early childhood, they are small compared to the gaps that are seen for data relating to adolescence.
The content of this report focuses on presenting a broad and global perspective on the status of girls and women. The authors hazard that, although this is not a comprehensive report, certain conclusions can be drawn: research for understanding the ways in which girls experience multiple forms of discrimination and exclusion and the ways that these can interact is urgently needed; a better understanding of the female perspective is needed in areas such as poverty reduction, health and education.
