From June 3rd – 13th 2024, the UNFCCC Bonn Intersessionals (SB60) will take place in Bonn, Germany – a key milestone on the road to COP29 in Baku in November 2024. Save the Children will be attending to ensure that children’s rights, needs, voices and equity are reflected in the negotiations.

In a landmark development at COP28, Parties to the UNFCCC mandated an ‘expert dialogue on children and climate change to discuss the disproportionate impacts of climate change on children and relevant policy solutions in this regard. This is scheduled to take place on June 4th during the UNFCCC Bonn intersessionals. The dialogue represents a significant step forward in overcoming the omission of children and their distinct vulnerabilities in discussions and guidance emanating from the UNFCCC and constitutes the first-ever meeting on the UNFCCC agenda focused on children.

This briefing contains key recommendations for SB60 and the expert dialogue. In particular, the briefing underscores the need for a follow-up process from the Dialogue to COP29 and beyond. For the sake of the world’s 2.4 billion children and future generations, it is essential to maintain focus and momentum, the sharing of good practices and capacity building of Parties on the integration of children’s distinct needs, perspectives, and their human rights in climate policies, actions, and finance.
