Better Discipline for Ghana’s Children

A survey undertaken by UNICEF shows that 90% of children in Ghana have been subjected to violent discipline in the year before the study. This statistic represents the 7th highest rate of violent punishment in a sample of low and middle-income nations. The widespread acceptance of corporal punishment in Ghana is in part due to the legality of it. Furthermore, structural violence within schools is also common and widespread in the nation.

This study by Challenging Heights, a rights-based child protection organisation, reflects upon their experiences with non-violent methods of discipline in school, investigates the impact of violent discipline in school, and considers arguments for and against its use in educational facilities.
