The direct transfer of cash to communities and households is a growing area of social development, where families and communities are given the dignity of choice, are encouraged to be innovative, and are provided with the necessary financial support. There is a growing body of evidence to indicate that trusting community groups to make wise decisions on the use of resources brings major benefits rather than problems. Save the Children contribute to the debate through chronicling the history, successes and difficulties encountered in providing financial grants to community groups in Mozambique in order to improve the lives of orphans and vulnerable children. The community grants programme in Mozambique has run for a period of three years, and the lessons learnt should be of interest to other organisations and government departments developing similar community grants programmes.
