Gender inequality has planted its roots deeply and strongly alongside Asian ways of living. Together with poverty and other social issues such as child marriage and child labour, the disparity becomes dominant, preventing millions of girls, particularly in South Asian countries, from having the opportunity to study and to lead a good life. Even worse, it risks harming their physical and emotional condition.
This study reports the results of Plan’s second gender scan and clearly portrays the reality and reasons why nearly 16 million girls in Asia are not going to school. It covers gender inequality in the home, the community and the education system; assesses the level of gender sensitivity in Plan’s education programmes; and identifies the modifications required to improve them. Annexes describe the gender scan methodology and Plan Asia’s School Improvement Programme
