This report summarises the findings of the study “Barns ekonomiska utsatthet under 1990-talet” (Economic vulnerability of children during the 1990s), conducted by Professor Tapio Salonen,at the request of Save the Children Sweden. The study constituted a first step towards the development of a national child welfare index that can be used for yearly comparisons at municipality level. Although children in Sweden are largely protected economically, child poverty increased during the 1990s, and by the year 1999, around 345 000 children were living in poor households, the most exposed groups being children of immigrant parents and children whose parents have low education levels. This represents one out of five children in the country. This report brings to light views and experiences of the underprivileged families in Sweden.
