Data and Trend Analysis (DATA) Refugees and Migrants at the Western Balkans Route Regional Overview July-September  2022 describe key trends in migrations in the region, detailing information about the number of people on the move, demography (age, sex, country of origin, etc.), behavioural patterns, and routes in use – with a focus on children, particularly unaccompanied children.

Key trends:

  • A rise in the number of registered refugees and migrants, compared to the same period of last year, was registered in the third trimester of 2022 in most countries along the Balkans route. According to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), the Western Balkans continued to be the most active migratory route into the EU in July, August and September.
  • The situation in Türkiye is burdened by the economic crisis and pending elections, motivating refugees and migrants to find a way and leave the country. Increasingly difficult living conditions – a global trend – are putting more pressure on deprived and marginalised communities worldwide, especially on children. Therefore, the rise of numbers and diversification regarding the nationalities of refugees and migrants travelling via the Eastern Mediterranean and then the Balkans route was evident during the summer.
  • A rise in the number of refugees and migrants travelling via the route has provoked changes in the policies of states in the region, neighbouring member states and the EU.
