The number of recorded attacks on education has increased in recent years. Almost 50 million children around the world are being denied schooling, and the number of attacks on education is rising, according to Save the Children’s new report “Attack on Education”. Based on UN data, Save the Children estimates that there were more than 3,600 separate, documented attacks on education in 2012. The report draws attention to the plight of children, teachers and education systems across the world that have fallen victim to attacks on education, and highlights the impact this violence has on children’s right to education. Save the Children is calling on world leaders to take major steps to protect education from attack and asks donors to ensure education receives the necessary levels of humanitarian funding to restore education promptly following an attack. The country case studies that are included in the report look at attacks on education in Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, occupied Palestinian territory and Israel, Pakistan and Syria.
