Bangladesh has suffered greatly from arsenic contaminated water, more than 40 million people are at risk of exposure to it. Arsenic consumption is a grave public health risk; it is associated with skin disease, lung cancer, and skin cancer. It can even penetrate the placental barrier to reach the fetus inside of a pregnant mother.
As part of the Shishuder Jonno programme, Save the Children has set up 30 community water treatment plants within Meherpur, reaching approximately 7500 households. This brief contains information on the implementation of the water treatment plant, the financial considerations, the communities’ perception, the sustainability of it, and areas for project improvement.
