Integrated Approaches to Improve Access to Family Planning Services in Mali 2015-2020

Family planning (FP) has been long-recognized as being an essential means for maintaining the health and well-being of women and their families. In Mali, the low use of reproductive health services in general and FP, in particular, contribute to deaths of women during and/or after childbirth and children of less than a year. Indeed, the lack of planning pregnancies leads to unwanted pregnancies, early, very close together, with a high risk of clandestine abortions thus increasing the risk of infection and maternal mortality.

Since December 2014, the  Services de Santé à Grand Impact project (SSGI), funded by USAID, works with the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (MSAS) of Mali, and in close collaboration with the partners involved in FP, to improve the demand and supply of FP services in order to contribute to the increase in the prevalence of modern contraception in 37 health districts in the regions of Kayes, Koulikoro, Sikasso, and Gao and the Bamako District, i.e. around 2.6 million women of childbearing age.
