Save the Children
Civic space is shrinking globally, with increasing laws and actions in Asia that restrict dissent and target human rights defenders, journalists, and civil society organizations. Children are also affected, facing barriers to freely express their views and participate in relevant discussions. Many are hesitant to identify as activists due to perceived risks, and some are discouraged by their guardians for safety reasons. Civil society organizations play a vital role in advocating for civic space, amplifying children’s voices, and providing support through awareness programs, digital safety training, and legal assistance. Save the Children, active in 17 Asian countries, supports children’s engagement in policy and advocacy at various levels.
In various Asian countries, efforts have been made to amplify children’s voices in policy and advocacy. In Hong Kong, forums and surveys on Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse (MRCA) led to policy recommendations and youth participation in legislative processes. In Indonesia, consultations with children influenced guidance on participation, health, and climate advocacy, with youth involvement in national and global forums. Laos contributed to the 2024 Voluntary National Review on sustainable development. In Nepal and the Philippines, children engaged in climate discussions with international bodies. In Thailand, children participated in environmental rights discussions, LGBTQI+ rights advocacy, and peace processes in conflict-affected areas. Advocacy on digital child protection and SRHR included children’s participation in the 2023 Commission on the Status of Women and the Global Forum for Adolescents in Indonesia.
Between June 2023 and June 2024, we have been able to engage in several regional and global influencing opportunities such as the UNGA, COP, Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development as well as support the development of ASEAN Environmental Rights Declaration.
This report is intended for sharing with UN systems, donors, and partners, highlighting Save the Children (SC) as a preferred partner for large-scale child engagement across the region. SC effectively bridges local and global efforts, demonstrating strong collaboration from the grassroots to the international level. Additionally, the report includes quotes from our partners that recognize our value in this field.
