Save the Children South Sudan
With funding from BHA, Save the Children South Sudan conducted a SMART survey in Akobo West of Jonglei State. The overall objective of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of malnutrition among children aged 6-59 months old and mortality rates among populations as well as the potential factors contributing to malnutrition and mortality in Akobo West.
The survey employed Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transitions
(SMART) methodology. sample sizes for anthropometry and mortality were
calculated using ENA for SMART software (January 11th, 2020 version)
The survey findings showed a very high GAM prevalence of 17.8% and SAM prevalence of 2.3%. GAM prevalence is above the emergency threshold of 15%. Crude mortality rate was 0.93 per 10,000 lives per day while under five mortality rate was 1.01. Both crude and under five mortality rates are below the emergency threshold of 1 and 2 respectively. A recall period of 106 days was used to calculate the mortality rates.
