2025 Impact Stories –Girls Unstoppable: Advancing Gender Equality

Girls Unstoppable is a global, multi country programme (2023–2026) implemented in China, Indonesia, Mexico, and Vietnam to advance gender equality by strengthening girls’ agency, safety, voice, and leadership. The programme responds to persistent structural and social barriers—including restrictive gender norms, violence, and exclusion from decision making—that limit girls’ opportunities to participate meaningfully in their communities and systems. Drawing on evidence that safe, supportive, and playful spaces enable empowerment, Girls Unstoppable combines Girls Decide, Learning Through Play, and Girl Led Movement Building approaches to create inclusive environments where girls can build confidence, learn about their rights, organise collectively, and lead change.
The programme has so far directly reached more than 35,000 children and achieved wide indirect reach through digital and media campaigns. Evidence across countries shows improvements in girls’ confidence, decision making, safety awareness, solidarity, and wellbeing. Girls moved from participation to leadership, designing and implementing community initiatives, influencing public dialogue, and engaging decision makers at local and national levels. Government recognition and adoption of programme elements across countries indicate growing system level influence. Overall, Girls Unstoppable demonstrates that when girls are supported through safe, playful, and structured collective spaces—and connected to decision making processes—they can strengthen their own agency and reshape the environments around them, providing a scalable model for advancing gender equality and child rights.
