Caption: Koko*, 23, is a mother of three children – Chris* (6), Angel* (3), and Anna* (2). The family lives in a rural village in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, where Koko* and her husband make a living from tobacco farming. Her children enjoy going to school and playing with others in the village. In April, just two days before Save the Children’s visit, Koko* noticed that her youngest daughter Anna* was sleeping much more than usual, and she was not eating, talking, or playing with her favourite ball. Not being able to afford healthcare at a local health centre, Koko* waited until the evening for a visit by a community health worker, François Kouadio, who she knew carries out such visit daily at households with young children and pregnant women. After basic screening and a blood test, Anna* tested positive for malaria, which explained why she was feeling unwell the entire day, and she was registered for a three-day treatment on malaria tablets.
