Stop the War on Children

Nearly one-fifth of children worldwide lived in a conflict zone in 2017. Every day 420 million children faced the threat of killings, recruitment by armed forces, abduction, sexual violence, or denial of humanitarian aid. New research conducted by the Peace Research Institute in Oslo, commissioned by Save the Children, reveals this horrifying reality faced by far too many children. In our 100th year, we renew our promise to protect all children, and call for conflicting parties to Stop the War on Children.

Since the end of the Cold War, the number of children living in conflict zones has nearly doubled. Children are deliberately targeted in conflict; they suffer due to indiscriminate military actions and the indirect consequences of war. Perpetrators are not held to account for the atrocities they commit toward children.
All children are protected by rights. It is our obligation to uphold them. This report establishes the basis of an international plan of action to protect children in conflict. Save the Children especially calls on world leaders and governments to take three steps to ensure that perpetrators of atrocities against children cannot walk away from these actions with impunity:
- Uphold standards of conduct in conflict
- Persecute perpetrators of violence
- Take real action to protect children in conflict, as well as to support their recovery.
