Scientists expect disasters to occur more often and be more destructive to rural communities in the United States in the coming years. Save the Children is collaborating with Columbia Climate School’s National Center for Disaster Preparedness to produce a series of briefs that will describe the things that schools and child-focused organizations in rural communities need to know to enable them to prepare for disasters and respond effectively. In particular, Columbia University will be highlighting information on which children in rural communities are most vulnerable during a disaster, the needs of rural children that are most likely to arise and strategies for addressing those needs, and pre- and post-disaster programs that communities can turn to for help.
